Pope Leo to the Jesuits: “Be experts in reconciliation”

This morning, October 24, the Pope received the superiors of the Society of Jesus in audience and encouraged them, in the spirit of St. Ignatius, to engage in discernment and innovation. In a world torn apart, he said, “we must become experts in reconciliation.” He urged them to “find and speak” the language of young people, to defend the poor against the many violations of their dignity, and to promote ethics in artificial intelligence, “challenging the false gods of consumerism.”

“Frontiers” and “Preferences” — real and virtual spaces in which to live as apostles of the Gospel and as instruments for spreading it effectively. The address that Pope Leo XIV delivered to the Jesuit major superiors — over a hundred of them gathered in the Synod Hall under the leadership of the Superior General, Fr. Arturo Sosa — is both wide-ranging and detailed. It is directed to a religious Order that, as the Pope acknowledged, “has long been present wherever the needs of humanity meet the saving love of God.”
