The Liguria Region will finance the restoration of the ‘Circumcision’, Rubens’ work conserved in Genoa

The painting, kept in the Gesù Church, is in need of restoration: a contribution of 30 thousand euro is on the way.

Genoa. The Circumcision of Jesus, a painting by Peter Paul Rubens in 1605 and kept in the Gesù Church since 1822, will be restored thanks to a EUR 30,000 contribution from the Region. This is what is foreseen by an amendment made to the budget presented by the Committee of the Regional Council.

It is an oil painting on a canvas 4 metres high and 2.25 metres wide, commissioned by Marcello Pallavicino, vestryman of Casa Professa of the Jesuits in Genoa. It is the altarpiece of the main altar of the Church of Saints Ambrose and Jesus. It is an artwork that already shows elements anticipating the Baroque art of the following years.

The restoration forms part of the exhibition of “Rubens and the Palaces of Genoa” that is being held at Palazzo Ducale until 22 January 2023 and will be displayed at the end of the exhibition and related events. The artwork, as stated in the amendment’s report, “has long been awaiting restoration that would guarantee its full original condition as well as greater public appreciation”‘.

The Region will grant a contribution of up to EUR 30,000 to the Casa del Gesù in Genoa, the legal entity in charge of the church in Piazza Matteotti.
